The 18th "Chinese Bridge" language competition for pupils & the 24th "Chinese Bridge" language competition for students Announcement for registration in Austria
"Chinese Bridge" is a major international language competition that has existed since 2002 and is organized by the Center for Language Education and Cooperation of the Chinese Ministry of Education.
The preliminary round in Austria is organized by the Embassy of the People's Republic of China in Austria and carried out by the Confucius Institutes of the University of Vienna and the University of Graz.
In this competition, learners of Chinese in Austria have the opportunity to showcase their skills and demonstrate them on an international stage. Based on the results of the competition, the winners qualify to take part in the final in China. The other winners receive certificates and awards.

1. contents of the competition
(1) Group of students
a.) Requirements for participants: Students aged 12 to 18 who do not have Chinese citizenship, who did not grow up in China and who themselves, as well as their parents, have a mother tongue other than Chinese may participate. Participants must also be currently attending a secondary school in Austria. Participants' Chinese language proficiency should be at least at A2 level.
b.) Content of the competition:
| A written test will be conducted on site to test the participants' knowledge of Chinese geography, history, economy, culture and other aspects. (Tasks will be given in German.) |
| Participants' ability to learn and use Chinese and their knowledge of Chinese culture will be tested. Participants should choose their own topic and talk about their experience of learning Chinese (within 2 minutes).
The jury will ask 1-2 questions. |
| Chinese singing, dancing, playing traditional instruments, opera singing, calligraphy, painting or other skills can be demonstrated (within 3 minutes). |
(2) Group of students
a.) Requirements for participants: Students enrolled in Austria aged 18 to 30 who are not Chinese citizens, who did not grow up in China and who themselves, as well as their parents, have a native language other than Chinese. Participants' Chinese language proficiency should be at least at A2 level.
b.) Competition content:
| A written test will be conducted on site to test participants' knowledge of Chinese geography, history, economy, culture and other aspects. (Tasks will be given in Chinese.) |
| Participants' ability to learn and use the Chinese language and their knowledge of Chinese culture will be tested. Title: One World, One Family (within 3 minutes).
The jury will ask 1-2 questions. |

3. time and venue of the competition
Competition time: May 10, 1:00 p.m. to 6:00 p.m.
Place: Aula of the University of Graz, Universitaetsplatz 3, 8010 Graz
Award ceremony
One first prize as well as several second and third prizes will be awarded in each group. Those who fulfill the conditions of the competition will be recommended to participate in the final in China in August or September if they achieve excellent results in the preliminary round (the exact procedure will be announced at a later date).
5.Notes
- Pre-selection will be based on the registration status. The participants who pass the pre-selection can participate in the competition on May 10th, furthermore the organizers will cover the travel expenses for participants from outside who pass the pre-selection.
- During the competition, PPT and background music for the short presentation and talent show can be used. Please prepare these in advance if required.
- Only tables, chairs and computers will be used as aids for the competition. Other items (e.g. for calligraphy or paper cutting etc.) must be brought by the participants themselves.
- Photos and video recordings will be made during the event, which can be used for press and advertising purposes.
